About Me
“Quality design produces a quality product.”
I am a hardware design engineer with more than 25 years of experience in analog and mixed-signal, precision measurement, power, and RF/microwave design. I take products from the first idea to production. My designs are produced in hundreds of thousands of units and are used all over the world. I have worked in both Europe and the United States.
I designed the RF section and the complete PCB of the DeLorme InReach satellite communicator. Garmin acquired DeLorme in 2016, and InReach is still a Garmin product today. At Franklin Electric, my OPTIMIZER3 design won the company its first R&D 100 Award.
What Makes My Designs Different
- I remove or minimize factory calibration. I build accuracy into the circuit itself. A device needs only a simple functional check at the end of the production line – no fixtures, no trim steps. On CELLGUARD Wireless, I removed calibration completely and cut unit cost by up to 40%.
- My projects usually reach production after one prototype. Even the InReach – four GNSS systems, Iridium satellite, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ZigBee on one board – had a single prototype. The next version was the production device.
- I simulate before anything is built. I use PSpice with my own model libraries, and Sonnet for critical RF sections and impedance matching. This is why my boards work the first time and pass FCC and EMI/EMC testing without redesign.
- I use AI as an everyday engineering tool. AI helps me build SPICE models, run simulations, check calculations and formulas, develop algorithms, and analyze datasheets. It makes my work faster, and I always check the results myself.
- Precision that stays. My analog designs hold their accuracy over temperature and time, without drift correction in firmware.
Products I Designed
DeLorme (acquired by Garmin)
- InReach – two-way satellite communicator with pole-to-pole messaging, SOS, and GPS tracking. I designed the RF/microwave schematic and the complete PCB. Used by the U.S. Navy and Army and around the world. Garmin acquired DeLorme to get the InReach product line.
Franklin Electric
- OPTIMIZER3 – online condition monitor for high-voltage circuit breakers. Won Franklin Electric’s first R&D 100 Award. Still without a direct competitor.
- CELLGUARD™ Wireless, Gen4 – wireless battery monitoring for power utilities, data centers, and telecom systems. My own concept and design. No calibration in production, up to 40% lower unit cost.
- Trip Signature Monitor – trip coil signature analysis for high-voltage circuit breakers, using TripTracer™ technology. My own concept, from idea to final product in six months.
- Corrosion Control™ System – sensors that detect the water and moisture that cause corrosion in diesel tanks and gasoline sumps. My own concept, from research to PCB. A new product category with no equivalent on the market.
- LL3 Digital Inventory Probe – high-accuracy fuel tank level monitoring with leak detection.
- Distribution Transformer Monitor – meter-grade monitoring for pad-mount and pole-mount transformers. I led the design team. One prototype, then production.
VAIS Technology
- High-End Digital Audio Player – an automotive audio player with extremely low distortion. It includes five power supplies, a DSP, controllers, a hard disk drive, a USB port, and my own analog output driver. Used in Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, and Honda/Acura vehicles.
- SoundLinQ2 iPod™ Interface – a universal audio and video adapter for Apple iPod, with high-quality sound and video and a 5 V charging add-on. Used in Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, and Honda/Acura vehicles.
- SIRIUS SCC1 Satellite Radio Receiver – a universal tuner box that gives full control of satellite radio through the car’s own audio system.
Svyazinvest
- Telephone channel interfaces – input/output devices for analog and digital (PCM) telephone channels in large telephone exchanges, for voice and data. Includes a noise-immune voice interface for very long phone lines in high-interference areas.
- APL Precision Line-Measurement Instrument – a digital controller with an analog measuring processor for testing telephone lines. It measures line noise up to 400 V, parasitic capacitance from 1 nF to 10 µF, and parasitic resistance up to 10 MΩ, with high accuracy and reliability.
- Ultra-Stable Master Oscillator – a digitally controlled timing reference for telecom networks, with long-term stability of 2×10−8 per 24 hours.
- Switched-Mode Power System, 48/60 VDC up to 5 kW – with automatic battery recharging and smart remote control and diagnostics.
Other Projects
- “Servo-Writer” Production Machine – I designed and built a controlled servo-writer for the servo plates of magnetic disk packs used in IBM 3350 and 3380 storage (IBM-370 systems). It had no equal in Eastern Europe and helped my employer become a market leader in Western Europe.
- Precision Bearing Test Equipment – equipment for checking the tolerance and accuracy of bearings for the European auto industry (Volkswagen Group: Škoda, Audi, Volkswagen). It included my ultra-low-noise, highly linear instrumentation amplifiers and filters for very sensitive measurements.
- Laboratory Power Supplies – low-noise, high-precision power supply units for laboratory use.
- Automotive Hi-Fi Audio System – a large project with an amplifier and speaker system:
- Three-band channels with active and passive filtering.
- Linear phase, amplitude, sound pressure level (SPL), and group delay responses.
- A special circuit that compensates for distortion in the speaker wires.
- THD+N of 0.005% or less (1 kHz, 40 W).
- Home High-End Audio – high-power stereo systems with amplifiers and speakers, designed for low distortion, low noise, and linear phase. Also an active speaker bar that gives wide stereo surround sound from a single enclosure, with S/PDIF input and class AB and UcD (class D) amplifiers.
- TV, Satellite, and RF Equipment – low-noise active TV antennas (50 kHz to 1000 MHz, 20–40 dB gain), RF pre-selectors and amplifiers, PAL/NTSC/SECAM converters, active switches and splitters, satellite TV systems for analog and digital signals, switched-mode TV power supplies, and special radio receiver and transmitter units for industry. The low-cost, high-quality antennas let many people in the former Soviet Union receive good TV in areas with weak signals.
- Vehicle Diagnostics – controllers and adapters for ALDL, K/L-Line, and OBD-II, supporting J1850 PWM and VPW, ISO 9141-2, KWP2000 (ISO 14230-4), and CAN (ISO 15765-4). Also a universal computer engine tester for most cars.
- Automatic Car Battery Charger – for 6, 12, and 24 V batteries, up to 10 A, with a desulfation mode that restores battery plates and capacity.
How I Work
On most projects, I own the hardware architecture. I define the system and the block diagram, design the schematic and the PCB with its layer stack-up, and set the algorithms for the firmware team. I work closely with software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams, and I stay hands-on through prototype, test, and production. This is technical leadership, not people management. I like to design.
